Adding Grandmillennial Style to Your Home

Grandmillennial is a design trend that is piquing the interest of the younger generation. Call it granny chic, call it grandma chic, call it anything but stuffy.

What is grandmillennial style?

An ode to the old. If you are looking to master the design trend in your home, the secret is striking the perfect balance between antique and contemporary.

Frilly throw pillows, botanical patterns and antique furniture are popular elements of the style. However, a key component of mastering the granny chic trend in your home is finding the right Chinoiserie wallpaper pattern.

Master Grandmillennial Style with Chinoiserie Wallpaper

If you are looking for grandmillennial home decor, our Chinoiserie peel and stick wallpaper collection offers a wide selection of removable prints from breathtaking floral to dreamy landscape designs.

Unlike traditional Chinoiserie wallpaper, our peel and stick prints feature a self-adhesive backing. Adding these intricate hand-painted designs into your home is as easy as peel, place and embrace.

Each Chinosierie peel and stick wall mural is custom printed to fit the exact dimensions of your space. In addition, you will have the opportunity to work one-on-one with our designer to ensure the perfect fit.

Designer Spotlight Series: Q&A with Kevin O’Gara

Kevin O’Gara is the founder of Thou Swell, a lifestyle and interior design blog based in Atlanta. We spoke to Kevin to learn more about Chinoiserie and the appeal of the grand millennial aesthetic.

Kevin recently updated a bedroom for his sister Grace, a college student living off-campus for the first time. One of our Chinoiserie murals was chosen to help tie the room together.

Chinoiserie Garden Peel and Stick Wall Mural
“As a rising Junior, it’s her first year living off-campus, so I wanted to make sure she had a stylish and comfortable place to come home to after her long days as a dance major! I started out with a very blank slate and gave her college bedroom a completely new look while keeping it light, fresh, and relaxing.” – Kevin O’Gara, Thou Swell

Kevin chose our Chinoiserie Garden wall mural in the colorway White Dove and describes the print as “a game changer” for the soothing space. We shared our exclusive Q&A with Kevin below.

Can you describe your design style for us?

My style is a fresh mix of new and old – growing up in the South gave me an appreciation for the classics! I love to mix in antiques with contemporary accents, and I tend to work in natural colors like shades of blues and greens.

What led you to choosing Chinoiserie for your sister's space?

I’ve always loved chinoiserie wallpaper, and when I found a temporary solution with such beautiful colorways, I knew it was perfect for this project! The grey tone-on-tone color is particularly soothing and gives the traditional pattern a subtly contemporary twist.

'Grandmillennial' is gaining popularity among young homeowners. How would you best describe the style trend?

I think Grandmillennial is really an appreciation for the classics and reviving some of the staples of traditional decor in a more playful way! I love how it has shone a light on vintage and antique styles that many of us grew up with but aren’t sure how to mix into modern interiors.

Can you share a few of your favorite styling tips for striking the perfect balance between old and new?

The key to mixing new and old is embracing the contrast! The older something is, the better it looks with something sleek and modern beside it. Use color to unify a design, rather than relying on style or period.

Was this your first time working with our product? How long did it take you to install our wallpaper?

It wasn’t my first time installing removable wallpaper – I’ve used it more times and I can count – so I do have a few tricks to getting it up quickly! It took me a little over an hour for this wall.

Can you share your best tips or tricks for applying our wallpaper without an installer?

I like to start from the top-left corner and work my way down, pulling the backing away as I go. Smoothing it out in one direction always helps avoid any wrinkling!

How did you feel about the space before applying our wallpaper and how do you feel about it now?

This space was a very typical apartment bedroom – basically a white box that made it a great blank slate for the new design. The wallpaper was a game-changer in terms of bringing up the level of design in the room and making it feel chic, custom, and full of personality.
