How to Measure for Custom Wallpaper & Wall Murals

Accurately Measure Square Footage: Your Ultimate Guide

If you're wondering how much custom wallpaper you need to order, you're in the right place! Our guiding principle is simple: measure twice and print once. Since our custom wallpaper is printed-on-demand, our designers will work with you to ensure a perfect fit for your space. However, your input is very important!

To accurately determine the amount of wallpaper required, you'll need to provide us with precise measurements of the areas you plan to cover. This could be for a single wall, an entire room, or framed panels. Make sure to take and record the measurements for each area separately.

Need extra help? We've got you covered with a detailed video and helpful worksheets below to guide you through the process.

A Straight Run | Calculating Square Footage Of Your Space - Not Accounting for Obstacles

Measuring for Customer Wallpaper including obstacles

Follow these steps to calculate the square footage required for your project:

1. Measure the Height: Record the height of your space in inches.

2. Measure the Width: Record the width of your space in inches.

3. Calculate Square Inches: Multiply the height by the width.

4. Convert to Square Feet: Divide the result by 144 to convert square inches to square feet.

5. Round Up: Round the result up to the nearest whole number.

6. Total Square Footage: If you have multiple spaces, repeat steps 1-5 for each and add the rounded numbers together.

Measuring for Customer Wallpaper excluding obstacles

For a more precise fit that excludes doors, windows, or other obstacles, follow these additional steps:

1. Measure the Height and Width: Record the height and width of each obstacle in inches.

2. Calculate Obstacle Square Inches: Multiply the height by the width for each obstacle.

3. Convert to Square Feet: Divide the result by 144 and round down to the nearest whole number.

4. Calculate Total Square Footage: Subtract the square footage of all obstacles from the square footage of all wall areas.

Try These Measurement Worksheets
Tempaper has created a measuring worksheet to assist in this process. Please note that when excluding obstacles, our designers will need not only all of the heights and widths of your areas and obstacles, but also their positions within the space. For example, obstacle one is on wall two and sits 45” from the left edge of the wall and 16” from the ceiling line.
