How to Apply Peel and Stick Wallpaper to Stair Risers: Easy DIY Guide

Before you begin, gather the following materials:

Peel and stick wallpaper
Measuring tape
Utility knife or scissors
Level
T-Square
Squeegee
Cleaning cloth
Ruler or straight edge
Cutting mat or surface to cut on

Step-by-step instructions:

1. Measure Your Stair Risers

Begin by measuring the height and width of each stair riser. Accurate measurements are important for ensuring that your wallpaper fits perfectly.

2. Clean the Surface

Thoroughly clean and vacuum the stair risers and treads to remove any dust or debris. A clean surface ensures better adhesion of the wallpaper.

3. Measure and Precut the Wallpaper for Each Stair Riser

Using your measurements, cut the wallpaper into strips. Make sure to leave a little extra at the top and bottom for adjustments. You can always trim the paper after it's applied.

For this particular project, we chose a non-directional print. We were able to turn the wallpaper panel horizontally and get 3 panels/risers from each section.

4. Position the Wallpaper

Starting at the bottom of the staircase, peel off the backing of the wallpaper. Carefully position it on the riser. Fortunately, these risers have trim at the top of each but it's best to have a level to ensure that the wallpaper is applied straight.

5. Smooth Out Air Bubbles

Using the felt side of the squeegee, smooth out any air bubbles as you apply the wallpaper. Start from the center and work your way to the edges.

6. Trim the Edges

Once the wallpaper is securely in place, use a utility knife to trim any excess along the top and bottom edges for a clean finish. You can use your squeegee's plastic side as a guide.

7. Repeat for Each Riser

Continue this process for each stair riser, ensuring that the patterns align for a cohesive look.
