Earth Month Blog: A Look at Materials & Processes

April is Earth Month, and it’s a good time to highlight certain wallpaper options and Tempaper & Co.’s materials and production methods. If you’re looking for a more environmentally friendly wallcovering option, this is most evident in our authentic grasscloth collection where natural materials and low energy production processes come together.

While not every wallpaper is made the same way, the materials and methods behind each product play an important role in how it’s produced and how it performs in a space. For grasscloth in particular, that story starts with the raw materials themselves.

Natural Materials, Thoughtful Craftsmanship, Handcrafted Production

Our authentic grasscloth wallpaper features fibers from renewable materials such as grasses, jute, and sisal. These materials bring texture and variation that come directly from the raw materials themselves, giving each installation a unique look that can’t be replicated with printed patterns alone.

The natural variation and textured look is shaped throughout the production process which is rooted in traditional handmade techniques:

  • Fibers are hand-dyed using water-based vegetable dyes, avoiding harsh chemicals
  • Materials are sun dried, limiting the need for energy intensive drying methods
  • Artisans hand weave the fibers on looms using time honored techniques which reduces the energy impact from production

Rather than relying on heavy machinery, this process emphasizes material and craftsmanship, resulting in a wallcovering defined by texture, natural variation and elevated design.

U.S. Based Manufacturing

Tempaper & Co.’s peel and stick wallpaper is manufactured and printed in the United States. This helps to reduce transportation distances compared to overseas manufacturing. Shorter shipping distances require less energy and result in lower natural resource usage. Our offices and warehouse are also based in the U.S. and together with our production we’re supporting local workforces and economies.

In addition to manufacturing in the U.S., we use water-based inks and adhesives in our peel and stick wallpaper products which reduce volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are a common concern in residential interiors.

Earth Month 2026 Initiative

In honor of Earth Month, we’ve added an option on our website for customers to donate to plant a tree through The Arbor Day Foundation

We’ve also pledged to plant one tree for every purchase order placed during our Spring High Point Market trade show this month.

These efforts are a simple way for customers and partners to take part in something larger during Earth Month.

Where you purchase matters

Not every wallcovering is made the same. For those who value material, texture, and process, Tempaper & Co. offers options that reflect a different approach to how wallpaper is made, while continuing our mission of making beautiful designs more accessible.
